Permaculture
Since the very beginning we tried to follow the principles of permaculture, which include a careful observation of the environment before intervening in it, the creation of an integrated design with a minimal of energy expenditure, as well as the overarching aim to enrich the ecosystem.

We have created and built, among other things, 2 synergic vegetable gardens, 2 compost toilets, a phyto-purification system, and a rainwater collection system on the roofs of existing structures. In all of these projects, we used local natural materials as much as possible. Furthermore, we have planted around 200 fruit trees in order to convert the olive monoculture into a rich and diverse, edible garden.

Our olive grove counts over 500 centuries-old olive trees, from which we get a high-quality and fragrant oil.
Compost Toilet

Compost toilets are the bathrooms we decided to adopt in our ecovillage, in order not to pollute the environment and the water. They present a valuable technology to collect and transform human feces into useful compost that can then be employed as fertilizer, through a process of aerobic digestion.
The most recent housing unit we realized is entirely built with recycled materials and zero costs. We used bundles and bales of straw that were then plastered with unbaked clay. Inside the house there is a rocket mass stove whose hot fumes are channeled in tubes that warm up the base of the bed.

This is the third rocket mass stove we were able to realize in the ecovillage. For us it means another step forward on the path to sustainability. It consumes about 90% less wood than a common stove, while also producing 40% less CO2 emissions. As there are no woods in the surrounding area, we believe this to be the ideal answer to our needs.
Shower and Sauna
The TartaBagno (engl. TurtleBath) was our first structure in which the union between art and permaculture became manifest. Thanks to the support of L.A.N. (Natural Architecture Laboratory) we were able to build the entire construction with local natural materials: arundo donax canes, straw, lime and clay. In the inside, the walls of the showers are made of tedalakt, while a rocket stove heats the water and, through a system of tubes installed on the floor, warms up also the rest of the room.

We regularly organize gatherings to clean the neighbouring beaches, trying also to involve the local population, and afterwards celebrating with music and food.
Cleaning the beach
About twice a week we bake with mother dough and ancient grains. Our clay oven was built with the precious help of Ferdinando Renzetti and Pino Massaru. It provides us with many delicacies such as taralli, frise, pizza, bread and cakes (also gluten free).
Our kitchen is entirely vegetarian/vegan and conscious, influenced by years of research in the world of macrobiotics and hygienism.
